Spark Plugs Last Longer Than They Used To
Most vehicles built in the last twenty years use iridium or platinum spark plugs, and those run 60,000 to 100,000 miles before they need replacing. Copper plugs, still found in older engines and some heavy duty trucks, wear out closer to 20,000 to 30,000 miles.
Your owner's manual lists the exact interval for your engine. If you no longer have the manual, the plug material and your mileage history will get you close enough to plan the work.

Those figures assume normal service. Towing, constant short trips, long idle periods in traffic and forced induction all shorten plug life, sometimes by a third.
Symptoms That Say Your Plugs Are Done
Spark plugs rarely quit all at once. The electrode wears back, the gap widens, and the ignition coil has to work harder every time it fires.
Rough idle or a shaking engine
A worn plug that skips a fire cycle shows up first at idle, when the engine is turning slowly and has the least momentum to hide it. You feel it through the steering wheel and the seat at a red light.
Hesitation when you accelerate
Merging onto the 215 or climbing the grade toward Summerlin puts the ignition system under its heaviest load. Tired plugs stumble under exactly those conditions while behaving fine on flat surface streets.
Hard starting
A weak spark needs more cranking to catch. If your engine turns over several extra seconds before it fires, and the battery tests healthy, look at the ignition side.
A check engine light
Misfires set P0300 series codes, and the code number usually points to the specific cylinder. That is the fastest way to narrow the problem, so it is worth having the stored codes read properly instead of guessing.
The Fuel Economy Hit Is Real
Worn plugs burn fuel incompletely. Drivers commonly lose between 5 and 15 percent of their fuel economy before they notice anything wrong with how the car drives.
At Las Vegas gas prices, that adds up faster than the cost of a plug set. If your tank suddenly is not going as far as it used to and your tire pressures are fine, worn plugs belong high on the list.
Why Valley Driving Wears Plugs Faster
Summer heat in Las Vegas pushes underhood temperatures well past what most parts of the country ever see. Heat is hard on coil boots and plug wires, and a cracked boot lets spark leak to ground instead of jumping the gap.
Short trips are the other factor. A lot of driving in Spring Valley, Enterprise and Paradise is under four miles, which never lets the engine reach full operating temperature and leaves deposits on the plug tips.
Stop and go traffic on Decatur and Rainbow adds idle hours that the odometer never records. Two cars with identical mileage can have very different plug condition because of it.
What Happens If You Keep Driving on Them
Ignoring a misfire is what turns a moderate job into an expensive one. Unburned fuel goes past the exhaust valve and into the exhaust stream.
That raw fuel cooks the oxygen sensors and can overheat the catalytic converter to the point of internal failure. A converter costs several times what a plug set costs, so a rough idle is not something to ride out for another few months.
Overworked ignition coils are the other casualty. When a coil has to force spark across an oversized gap for thousands of miles, it fails early and takes a good plug down with it.
What the Job Actually Involves
On many four cylinder engines, replacing a set of plugs is straightforward, and the coils lift right off the top of the valve cover. V6 and V8 engines with the rear bank tucked against the firewall take considerably longer, and some require removing the intake manifold.
New plugs get gapped to the manufacturer specification and torqued to spec, because an overtightened plug can damage aluminum cylinder head threads. Coil boots and any deteriorated wires get inspected at the same time.
If the misfire is still there on new plugs, the fault sits somewhere else in the system. That is when a full ignition system inspection earns its keep, since coils, injectors and compression problems all produce similar symptoms.

- You are within 10,000 miles of the interval in your manual
- The engine idles rough or shakes at stops
- Fuel economy dropped without an obvious cause
- A check engine light came on and stayed on
- You bought the car used with no service records
