Pull over as soon as it is safe, shut the engine off, and let it sit at least 30 minutes before you open anything under the hood. Do not try to make it to the next exit.
An engine that runs hot for another five miles can warp a cylinder head or blow a head gasket. That turns a $200 hose replacement into a repair that costs thousands.
The First Five Minutes
When it is 112 degrees outside, the gap between running warm and real damage is measured in minutes. Work through these steps in order.
- Shut off the air conditioning. The compressor adds load and heat that your engine cannot spare right now.
- Turn the heater on full. It is miserable on a Las Vegas afternoon, but the heater core acts as a second radiator and buys you enough time to reach a safe shoulder.
- Get off the road. Aim for a parking lot or a wide shoulder well away from traffic. On I-15 or the 215 Beltway, keep rolling slowly until you have real space.
- Turn the engine off and get out. Stand clear of the vehicle, especially if you see steam.
- Pop the hood if the latch is reachable. Trapped heat under a closed hood slows everything down.
If the temperature gauge is buried and you smell something sweet or hot, treat it as a full stop. Coasting to a shop is not worth the gamble.
Never Open the Radiator Cap on a Hot Engine
A sealed cooling system holds coolant far above the normal boiling point because it is under pressure. Twisting off the cap drops that pressure instantly and the coolant erupts as scalding steam.
Emergency rooms in the valley see these burns every single summer. They land on the face, neck, and forearms, and they are entirely avoidable.
Wait until you can rest your hand on the upper radiator hose without pulling away. In Nevada summer that can take a full hour, not the 15 minutes people usually give it.
The safer place to add coolant
Once the engine is genuinely cool, top off the plastic overflow reservoir rather than the radiator itself. Fill to the cold line and no higher.
Plain water will get you to a shop in a pinch, but it boils sooner and offers no corrosion protection. Have it replaced with the correct coolant mix soon after.
Why Las Vegas Is Harder on Cooling Systems
Your cooling system is engineered with a margin above normal operating temperature. Summer here eats most of that margin before you even start the car.
Ambient air near 110 degrees means the radiator has far less temperature difference to work with. Add asphalt radiating heat back up at the underside of the car and the numbers get worse.
Then there is the AC, which runs nearly year round and dumps its heat through the condenser sitting directly in front of the radiator. Stop and go traffic on Decatur, Tropicana, or Rainbow removes the airflow that would normally carry that heat away.
Climbing out toward Summerlin or up the grades near Henderson puts the engine under sustained load at the worst possible time. A cooling system that seemed fine in February can fail on the first 105 degree afternoon.
What Overheating Usually Means

A slipping or shredded belt is one of the fastest ways to overheat because the water pump stops circulating coolant entirely. If yours is glazed or cracked, a new drive belt is cheap insurance compared to what comes next.
Can You Drive It Once It Cools Down?
Sometimes, but only if the coolant level is correct, you see no leaks, and the gauge stays normal within the first mile. Keep the heater on and stay off the freeway.
Anything else deserves a flatbed. Towing costs far less than a head gasket, and an engine that overheated once will do it again on the next hot stretch of road.
Also pay attention to warning lights that appear afterward. Heat damages sensors, and a light that stays on afterward is worth a proper check engine light scan rather than a guess.
Preventing the Next One
Most overheating we see at our shop on S Decatur Blvd traces back to old coolant, a tired radiator cap, or a hose that had been seeping for months. None of those are expensive to catch early.
- Check the coolant level in the reservoir once a month when the engine is cold.
- Have the cooling system pressure tested before summer arrives, not during it.
- Replace coolant on schedule. Old fluid loses its corrosion inhibitors and lets deposits build inside the radiator, which is exactly what a coolant system flush clears out.
- Watch for a temperature gauge that reads slightly higher than it used to. That is your early warning.
